Contribution to Urban Society
We make civic engagement visible and promote the common good in Basel, serving as a physical platform at the heart of the city.
Since 1966, when the military moved out, there have been debates and arguments about what to do with the main building of the Kaserne, an architectural landmark in the heart of Basel.
Since 1980, the area has been used by various actors from culture, sports, gastronomy, religion, etc. The area has become a well-known cultural and important living center in Basel. The main building did not play a significant role and was mainly used by schools.
With the conversion of the main building, kHaus, the Rhine promenade was connected to the barracks area via three breakthroughs.
A contemporary, open and lively cultural and creative center is to be created using a new use. It will have a long-term positive impact on the barracks area, the surrounding neighborhoods, and the city through its projects.
Fluxdock AG developed a concept co-creatively with 21 organizations and was awarded the contract by the technical and steering commission in spring 2021. The co-creative process ensured that the concept represented what could realistically be implemented and desired, and needed by the organizations. It was not only an integral part of the project in its conception but also remained a central tenet in its implementation and realization.
Thus, fundamental aspects of the organization and living together in the newly renovated main building are discussed, negotiated, developed, discarded, and improved in a co-creative way.
